Veterinary science student rewarded for dedication February 24, 2017 A Murdoch University student has been named as the Pearson Student of the Year in the science, computer science and IT category for her academic achievement and personal dedication. Kelly Algar, who is about to begin the second year of veterinary science degree after transferring from animal science, has been awarded $1,000 after being nominated by one of her lecturers, Associate Professor Trish Fleming from the School of Veterinary and Life Sciences. Kelly was required to submit a short video presentation for the competition in which she explained her passion for animal health, the reasons for her success and how her learning at Murdoch is impacting on her life. “I was very shocked to win this award!” said Kelly, who already has two degrees from Murdoch in Law and Conservation and Wildlife Biology. “I know there would have been many other excellent applicants so I am flattered that my application was deemed the best. “I am hoping that through studying at Murdoch I will gain the skills and knowledge to make an important difference where it is needed most. “My studies will give me the tools I need to spread awareness of the issue of animal health and welfare. Resources are depleting and this is putting greater pressure on our animals. It is challenging our food conversion ratios, introducing new diseases and decreasing our spacial availability.” In nominating Kelly for the award, Professor Fleming commended her “outstanding grade for Foundations of Vertebrate Form and Function”, with an impressive 99 per cent mark in her mid-semester exam. The Pearson Student of the Year Award is presented to Australian students who have demonstrated outstanding effort in seven fields of study. The winner of each category is determined by a panel of subject matter experts. Pearson is an education resources business which works with policy makers, practitioners and students to deliver learning outcomes.
