Murdoch University student Nicole Bickford has won the Study in Australia: 2010 Video Contest for her humorous and heartfelt video, An Unexpected Australian Adventure.
The 19-year-old is a Natural Sciences student from the University of Alaska. She has been studying at Murdoch University since August 2010 on the Study Abroad Program, which gives overseas students a chance to study and live in Western Australia while completing their degree.
Nicole said she jumped at the chance to enter the competition, which called for international students to create a video that explored their perceptions of Australia and captured the unexpected experiences of their stay.
“When I heard about this contest I immediately got to work piecing it together in the hopes of winning the grand prize of two return tickets to Australia so I could fly my mum and sister over next year,” she said.
“I wanted the video to be both funny and emotional. I wanted my friends to be a big part of it because they have made my time here in Australia perfect.”
She said was still in shock after winning the competition.
“It’s so surreal especially since the video had initially been disqualified because the judges didn't think I’d submitted my personal information on time,” she said.
Nicole’s video is a colourful montage of her most enjoyable experiences both on campus and at some of Western Australia’s iconic hotspots.
She said she has enjoyed every minute of her time in Perth, especially university life.
“My time here has been so amazing. I absolutely love Perth and Murdoch is an awesome university. I’ve found all of my professors and tutors knowledgeable and they care about their students. I have never felt swamped or helpless,” she said.
“Also, the campus is gorgeous and well laid out, and living in the Student Village is a blast.”
Nicole is studying at Murdoch until the end of semester one, 2011.
