Telethon Community Cinemas screening

Starlit cinema: The Telethon Community Cinema season at Murdoch runs until 3 February

Hollywood stars will be coming to Murdoch University for the fourth summer in a row thanks to its collaboration with Telethon Community Cinemas.

The latest outdoor cinema season will run from Thursday 16 November until Saturday 3 February in the leafy surrounds of Lower Bush Court on Murdoch’s Perth Campus.

The program features a mix of critically-acclaimed and family-orientated movies like Captain Underpants, Thor: Ragnarok, Blade Runner 2049, Dunkirk and Suburbicon.

Later in the season, the program will include screenings of big summer blockbusters like Justice League, Paddington 2 and Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

The season is made possible by an army of volunteers, who do everything from selling popcorn to collecting tickets on the door, ensuring that all profits can be directed to deserving children’s charities.

Organiser Ken Gibbons from Telethon Community Cinemas said more than $8 million had been raised over the 16-year history of the organisation, which also runs outdoor cinemas in Burswood, Bassendean and Mandurah.

“Last year alone we raised more than $816,000 and we were recently very proud to be able to present a cheque to Telethon for $614,000,” Mr Gibbons said. “The remainder went to a wide range of organisations that are dedicated to helping children, such as Youth Futures and Make A Wish WA.

“We have been delighted to see the seasons at Murdoch growing in popularity since beginning in 2014, and last year’s attendance figures were up by 40 per cent on the previous year.

“Clearly, open air cinema at Murdoch has become a staple of the summer for the local community.”

Murdoch Events Manager Glenn Hamilton said the cinema seasons had opened up the campus to the local community.

“We are proud to share our spectacular campus with our neighbours, and the seasons have ensured our wonderful open spaces are being utilised and enjoyed," he said.

“Community Cinemas also gives us the opportunity to give something back and our students and staff have enjoyed being a part of the volunteer teams which run the Murdoch season.”

Ticket pricing remains the same as last season at $14 for adults, $10 for students (16 years and over) / seniors and $7 for children (5-15 years). Parking for the venue is also plentiful.

More details on volunteering and the full program for the season are available on the Telethon Community Cinemas website.
