Seven first year Murdoch University students from regional areas of Australia are being supported by a special scholarship program.

Every year, the George Alexander Foundation (GAF) scholarships are awarded to exceptional students from remote and regional areas to help fund their studies.

The awards are each worth $24,000 over three years and assist recipients with accommodation and living expenses as they transition to living away from their friends and families.

Seven students at Murdoch University are among the list of 2017 recipients, with six from WA and one from Cairns in Queensland:

  • Annabelle Goulden-Buckley from Kununurra
  • Heath Feutrill from Vasse
  • Rohitt Lal from Aveley
  • Reuben Pemberton-Ovens from Balingup
  • Clare Bandy from Donnybrook
  • Jessica Cleasby from York
  • Hayley Mais from Cairns.

Jessica, who is studying for a double degree in law and criminology, said the scholarship means she can really focus on her degree.

“I was incredibly thankful to have my efforts and achievements recognised by the foundation,” she said.

“It was that little pat on the back that really gave me confidence to start my first semester at university with a bang.”

Heath added that the GAF scholarship was helping him to achieve a better balance between his education, work and social life.

“Winning the scholarship has reaffirmed that I'm capable of thriving at university,” said Heath, who is studying for a Bachelor of Education, specialising in early childhood education and primary teaching.

“I am incredibly grateful for the assistance of the George Alexander Foundation and to those who supported me in pursuit of this.”

The George Alexander Foundation has been supporting Murdoch students since 2008, providing more than $1 million in scholarships to help more than 50 high achieving regional students gain a tertiary degree.

In 2016, the Foundation renewed the scholarship partnership for another three years meaning 18 new scholarships can be offered between 2017 and 2019.

“This scholarship is helping regional students to realise their dreams,” said Development officer Clara Millet.

“The competition for the scholarships this year was especially fierce so the final seven had incredibly strong applications.

“Every GAF scholar has strong leadership and academic skills and is giving back to their community in some way.”
