Opinion: How does Australia's refugee per capita intake compare to other countries? September 9, 2015 As the news of Syrian refugees fleeing their country to escape war and poverty grips the world, Murdoch University's Associate Professor Mary Anne Kenny examines Australia's resettlement of refugees through the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in an article in The Conversation. In her article "Fact Check: Does Australia take more refugees per capita through the UNHCR than any other country?", Professor Kenny discusses Prime Minister Tony Abbott's recent claims about Australia's resettlement of refugees. "The prime minister is correct to say that Australia’s resettlement program through the office of the UNHCR is the highest per capita globally," said Professor Kenny. "However, less than 1% of the world’s refugees are handled by the UNHCR resettlement program." To read the article, click here.
