The use of laptops and tablets is becoming ever more prevalent for Australian students in today’s digital world. Students have benefited from the introduction of these fundamental tools for educational advancement and IT skill development, but do Australian guidelines on screen time for school children need to be adjusted due to the health issues associated with heavy screen use?

Dr Margaret Merga, Lecturer and Researcher in Adolescent Literacy, Health Promotion and Education at Murdoch University, delves into this argument in an article for The Conversation. Merga looks at the need to quantify the impact increased screen time is having on children using devices for both education and recreational purposes.

There are definitely impacts on health as the result of much screen time. As parents of a teen and two primary aged children we have to continuingly come up with a variety of ways to limit screen time (max 1 to 2 hours per day) whether it's used as play or part of an educational/school work.
Having attended Prof Donna Cross' talk last week in regards to the 'teen brain', and it rung strong in my ears, she pointed out the three main detriments to long screen use – vision impact, lack of muscle development and the loss of social sensitivity and skills for young minds.
