Dr Jeffrey Wilson: New partnership with Indonesia

Murdoch University has forged an important international education partnership by launching its first joint degree with an Indonesian university.

The new Master International Affairs and Security enables students from the Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), one of Indonesia’s top three universities, to complete a year of postgraduate studies in the Sir Walter Murdoch School of Public Policy and International Affairs.

Academic Chair Dr Jeffrey Wilson said this was a major achievement that would help strengthen ties with one of Australia’s critical partners.

“Policymakers at state and Federal level in Australia have identified the need to build the bi-lateral relationship, and this is especially important for Western Australia,” he said.

“We share a border and growing trade, foreign affairs, security and education relationships.

“Last year 1.2 million Australians visited Indonesia but, incredibly, there were only 158,000 Indonesian visits to Australia, a 7:1 ratio.

“We need to expand people-to-people links in order to deepen mutual understanding, and so the opportunity for Indonesian students to enrich their study with a year at Murdoch University is an important development.”

Dr Janice Dudley, Associate Dean of the School of Business and Governance, said the partnership cemented a 25-year relationship established by Murdoch University’s Asia Research Centre. This has featured extensive exchange and mentor programs as well as short-term intensive courses in Indonesia.

“Murdoch’s expertise in international politics, trade, investment, security and foreign policy is equipping graduates who will help secure Australia’s position in the world and future international relationships.”

“This complements and builds upon existing Murdoch/UGM joint undergraduate programs in Global Politics and Policy, Security Terrorism and Counterterrorism and International Aid and Development.”
