Murdoch University will have the opportunity to establish strong links in research, learning and teaching in health and medical sciences following the opening of the $2 billion Fiona Stanley Hospital last week.
“Murdoch’s outstanding facilities and burgeoning areas of research innovation are uniquely placed to build a future directly linked to health sciences excellence,” said Interim Vice Chancellor Professor Andrew Taggart.
“With significant growth expected in this field, the University is planning for a significant increase in student numbers, as well as receiving additional research income in medical and health services.
“Additionally, Murdoch University together with the University of Notre Dame Australia and FSH will make a series of jointly funded Professorial appointments in Medicine, the first of these in Rehabilitation Medicine to coincide with the opening of the State Rehabilitation Centre at the hospital.”
Subsequent appointments in areas of Neurology, Mental Health (acute perinatal care) and Geriatric Medicine will commence in 2015.
Sitting adjacent to FSH is Murdoch’s 44 hectare Eastern Precinct development site, a project led by Acting Chief Operations Officer Steve Dickson.
The development site is the largest single prime development site in a 15 minute travel radius of the CBD, bordered by South Street and Murdoch Drive.
“The Eastern Precinct site forms part of the University campus, and at 500,000m2 is capable of supporting more than $3billion of mixed use development,” Mr Dickson said.
“Combined with our proximity to FSH – one of the greatest concentrations of acute health facilities anywhere in the world, University is perfectly positioned not only as a research, learning and teaching institution, but as a key contributor to the diversification of the WA economy through the development potential of the site.”
It is anticipated that the first phase of development will attract A$400million investment, which is expected to result in the establishment of health and allied health services, large scale biomedical research facilities, medical engineering and pharmaceutical production.
