New course to offer school leavers a ‘second chance’ at uni December 22, 2014 School leavers who just miss out on a university offer after receiving their ATAR scores can top up their skills at Murdoch University fast via a new four week enabling program beginning in early January. OnTrack Sprint is a free preparation course that when successfully completed qualifies students for entry into a wide range of Murdoch degrees for an immediate start in semester one 2015. Students are eligible for entry to OnTrack Sprint if they have completed their WACE in the last 18 months and have generated an ATAR of between 60 and 69.5 or if they have generated a score of over 70 but have not quite achieved English language competence. “The idea with OnTrack Sprint is to provide students with an intensive grounding in Murdoch University life which will get them used to being on campus and the tertiary approach to learning and teaching,” said Gael Gibbs, manager of Access Programs at Murdoch. “That way, when they begin their degrees, students can properly focus on attaining their academic goals rather than worrying about how they should reference or which lecture theatre they are supposed to be in. It is often these sorts of issues which can prevent students from achieving their full potential at university. “The students will also be able to start university with their friends, who are a ready-made support network at a time when they have so many changes to negotiate.” Ms Gibbs added that there is no need to change preferences if students receive an ATAR that is below their expectations. Students may still be able to access around 70 undergraduate degrees at Murdoch University via OnTrack Sprint. Completing OnTrack Sprint will ensure they are across the academic writing, reading, critical thinking and research skills required to succeed as a Murdoch University undergraduate. OnTrack Sprint will be offered for the first time at Murdoch’s South Street and Rockingham campuses from January 19 to February 13. Classes will run from 9.30am to 3.30pm on Monday to Friday and there will be assignments for students to complete out of hours. Applications for OnTrack Sprint open on December 29 and close on January 15. Spaces are limited. For more information contact Murdoch on 1300 MURDOCH (1300 6873624) or firstname.lastname@example.org.
