Murdoch University experiences a surge in demand January 18, 2011 Demand for Murdoch University undergraduate courses has increased by nearly 15 per cent for the first semester of 2011. Acting Vice Chancellor, Professor Gary Martin said Murdoch expects to make 350 more offers through TISC than this time last year. “Overall we are likely to make well over 3000 offers to students compared to 2600 in the 2010 February intake,” Prof Martin said. He said popular course choices at Murdoch for 2011 included Conservation and Wildlife Biology, Computer Science, Nursing, Chiropractic Science, Commerce and Animal Science. Murdoch’s Juris Doctor program, which allows students with a degree in another discipline to gain a law qualification, has received high demand. There has also been increased interest in undergraduate places at Murdoch’s regional campuses in Rockingham and Peel where numbers of offers are expected to double. A new course at Rockingham, Applied Events Management, has proven popular. Prof Martin said that Murdoch’s increase in demand for places could be attributed to a number of factors. “We have changed our entry scores to enable a broader range of people to apply for Murdoch courses and to meet Federal Government participation targets, and we published our indicative ATAR scores earlier in the year to help students with their course selection,” he said. Prof Martin said Murdoch is also being recognised as a university that provides an enriched student experience in which students from diverse backgrounds can succeed and not simply those who have achieved outstanding results in secondary school. “We have developed some great student support systems to assist students with varying levels of confidence to succeed with their studies.” Professor Martin said that for those students who did not meet entry requirements, there were a number of options available including participation in preparation and bridging courses.
