Murdoch student scores a bird’s eye view of fashion week October 20, 2011 Murdoch University Communication & Media Studies student, Jeremy Long, has spent the last semester enjoying a work experience placement at The Sunday Times. Jeremy, who is an international student from Singapore, is completing the work experience as part of his Professional Placement in Media Communication and Culture unit. He has been assigned to The Sunday Times as an intern photographer. “During each shift I’m attached to a photographer and most of the time I’m assisting them with setting up, lighting and props,” Jeremy said. “Sometimes though, I'm also given the opportunity to photograph and put my pictures into The Sunday Times image system.” The highlight of Jeremy’s internship so far was during Perth Fashion Week. “My best work was from the Claremont Quarter Perth Fashion Festival where I photographed models on the catwalk.” Jeremy’s photographs are shown on Perth Now. The Sunday Times Picture Editor Jackson Flindell is supervising Jeremy. He said he had come on in leaps and bounds since starting his internship. “Jeremy has been fantastic. He’s enthusiastic, polite and a delight to deal with,” Mr Flindell said. “Last week we sent him out to a job on his own. He went with a journalist to get head shots of people making comments about current issues on the streets – what are known as vox pops. “Jeremy took it seriously, listened carefully to direction and came back with good results. “At another job where Jeremy assisted a photographer at a court case, they needed to split up and Jeremy was able to get photographs of victims coming out of court. “The results were fantastic. They were well lit, well composed, and showed good emotion.” The Professional Placement unit was developed to give final year students on-the-job industry experience to provide a practical bridge from university into the workplace. “I’ve learnt a lot from The Sunday Times professionals and I want to thank them and Murdoch University for arranging the placement,” Jeremy said.
