Murdoch political research to have impact through international think tank

March 9, 2018

Industry partnership: Dr Wilson's economic expertise will help shape policy.

Murdoch University’s Dr Jeffrey Wilson has been appointed as the Head of Research at the Perth USAsia Centre.

Dr Wilson is a political scientist, who specialises in regional economic integration in the Indo-Pacific.

His research examines how transformation in the regional economic architecture – including trade agreements, multilateral organisations and policy dialogues – is reshaping the contemporary economic and business environments of Asia.

“The Perth USAsia Centre is a leading think tank focusing on geo-political issues, policy development and building a strategic affairs community across government, business and academia,” Dr Wilson said.

“Being able to work within such an internationally focused centre will enable my research at Murdoch University to easily enter the narrative of the quickly evolving policy environment of the Indo-Pacific.”

The Perth USAsia Centre, located at The University of Western Australia, is a non-partisan, not-for-profit institution strengthening relationships and strategic thinking between Australia, the Indo-Pacific and the USA.

The Centre’s programs focus on the emerging Indo-Pacific regional architecture, and Australia-US-Indo-Pacific relationships.

Under this industry partnership, Dr Wilson will provide leadership and strategic direction in developing and managing the Perth USAsia Centre’s research across its publications, policy and dialogue activities.

Professor Garry Rodan, head of Murdoch University’s Asia Research Centre said he was delighted about Dr Wilson’s conjoint appointment.

“Dr Wilson’s new role strengthens existing links between Murdoch University and the Perth USAsia Centre,” Professor Rodan said.

“This kind of research partnership is invaluable in building links between Murdoch University and industry, and fostering the translation of academic research for policy and business audiences.”
