Murdoch graduates WA’s first medical engineer

Western Australia’s first locally trained medical engineer will graduate from Murdoch University this week.

Chantal Oliver started her Bachelor in Medical Engineering at Murdoch University four years ago, looking for a career which would enable her to work at the forefront of healthcare and quality–of-life technology around the world.

As a student in the first cohort to undertake the degree in Western Australia, she played a key role in discovering and articulating what the hospitals were looking for in the medical engineering field.

“Medical engineers play an important role in the healthcare industry, designing and improving equipment used to diagnose and treat medical problems,” said Chantal.

“During my work experience at Royal Perth Hospital we realised there was a need for graduates who could assess risks associated with medical equipment and ensure that Australian standards were being upheld.”

Chantal helped Royal Perth Hospital and Murdoch University to work together to tailor the degree to the Western Australian hospital system.

“Chantal’s commitment, and her pleasant and easy-going manner, made her the perfect pathfinder for developing our engineering program and for building relationships between our School and RPH”, said Dr Greg Crebbin, the Academic Chair of Engineering at Murdoch University.
