President Trump wants to drastically cut the budget for overseas aid

US President Donald Trump’s first budget request includes a $4.6 billion cut in humanitarian assistance and global health spending.

The President has also asked for a 32 per cent cut on funding for diplomacy and overseas aid.

In an article for The Conversation, Murdoch University research associate Dr Ana Rita Sequeira says the cuts will diminish the world’s capacity to prevent and coordinate interventions to tackle human health security events.

She warns the cuts will hamper the ability to deliver rapid and coordinated responses to borderless infectious disease outbreaks.

If the budget is approved by Congress, the changes will be a ‘game-changer for global health’, says Dr Sequeira.
