A team of students from Murdoch University has picked up a number of awards at an international law competition.

Kala Campbell, Katrin Long and Jon Stynes represented the University at the International ADR Mooting Competition in Hong Kong.

The International ADR Mooting Competition is an annual event hosted by the City University of Hong Kong.

Murdoch’s team competed against 17 law schools from around the world.

They were named the Overall Winners in Mediation and won a number of other awards including Grand Finalists in Arbitration.

Kala Campbell won Best Client in Mediation and Katrin Long was named Best Mediator.

Lorraine Finlay is a lecturer in the School of Law and also Murdoch’s Director of Mooting.

She said: “This is an outstanding result that again demonstrates the strength of our award-winning moot program at Murdoch University.

“The students and their coaches have worked incredibly hard and have proven that Murdoch students can successfully compete, and win, against the best in the world at a prestigious, international competition.”

Students were provided with a fictitious legal problem involving an international commercial dispute and presented both written and oral submissions on behalf of their clients before a panel of arbitrators.

A unique aspect of this competition is that it gives students the opportunity to experience both mediation and arbitration during each competition round.

The Murdoch team had been preparing for the competition since March and spent hours researching, writing and perfecting their submissions.

They were supported by their Team Coach Michael Barnes and Assistant Coach Heather Costelloe.

Both Michael and Heather have previously represented Murdoch in international moot competitions, with Michael being a Murdoch Alumni who is now working as a lawyer at law firm Corr Chambers Westgarth in Perth, Western Australia.

Heather is a law student who most recently won an Honourable Mention for the Best Individual Oralist as part of the Murdoch Team in the 22nd Vis Moot.

Congratulations to everyone involved.
