In the spirit of the University Games October 5, 2011 Murdoch University has taken out one of the top three awards at the 2011 Australian University Games held on the Gold Coast. Manager of Sport and Recreation Adrian Fisher said the Murdoch athletes were awarded the prestigious John White Trophy (Spirit of the Games). “This trophy is awarded to the University whose athletes conduct themselves in an outstanding and spirited manner both on and off the sports fields throughout the Games,” Mr Fisher said. “Murdoch has never won this award before and it has not been won by a WA University for many years.” The Murdoch team also won four bronze medals in Men’s AFL, Men’s Tennis, Lawn Bowls and Kendo. In the Doug Ellis Placing (measures ranking based on per capita result) Murdoch placed 12th out of 42 universities. Almost 7000 athletes competed in 29 different sports in this year’s Games.
