Free talk on Japanese pop culture and its fans March 31, 2017 From Evangelion and Spirited Away, to Pokemon, Super Mario and ‘The Samurai,’ Japanese popular culture has been loved and consumed not only in the land of its origin, but has also captured the imagination of the world for many decades. It has inspired its devotees to spend enormous amounts of money, time and effort to watch their favourite directors’ creations, to collect goods featuring their characters, to play games for countless hours, and even to dress the part to attend huge conventions with fellow fans. In a free public lecture at Murdoch on Monday, 3 April at 6pm, Dr Leonie Stickland, Lecturer in Japanese from Murdoch University’s School of Arts, will unravel the mystique around the unprecedented popularity of the many facets Japanese pop culture. “Forms of its popular culture such as manga, anime, gaming, pop music and musical theatre now enjoy a broad appeal,” says Dr Stickland. “There are genres to attract every age- and interest-group, and every demographic.” “Fans who devote themselves obsessively to their favourite mode of pop culture are called otaku in Japanese, and the development of electronic media has played a significant role in creating fan communities and in enabling information to be shared among them.” Dr Stickland’s lecture is the latest in the Undercover lecture series, free talks by Murdoch researchers which tackle common misconceptions and reveal interesting facts about a diverse range of topics investigated at the University.
