Economists to gather at Murdoch University July 4, 2013 Murdoch University, in conjunction with The Economic Society of Australia (WA), will host the 42nd Australian Conference of Economists from July 7 to 10, 2013. To be held at Murdoch’s South Street Campus, ‘Beyond the Frontiers: New Directions in Economics’ will feature nine Keynote Sessions and 122 papers being presented, with topics ranging from the theoretical to the practical. Chief Organiser Professor David Butler from Murdoch’s School of Management and Governance said the gathering was about open debate and discussion of current economic issues. Highlights include Dr Andrew Clark of the University of Paris looking at how government decisions relate to happiness economics in his paper ‘The Easterlin Paradox and Public Policy’. Dr Richard Freeman, the Herbert Ascherman Chair in Economics at Harvard University, will explore the economics of science in the global economy. And one of Australia’s pre-eminent economists and one of the nation’s most influential voices in public policymaking, Professor Bob Gregory will present ‘Where to Now for the Australian Economy? Explaining Post-Mining Boom Outcomes.’ Other topics include exports and productivity in China, the ‘myths’ of behavioural economics and reflections on women in academic economics. “The Australian Conference of Economists is always informative and stimulating, and given the calibre and variety of our final program, this year will be no exception,” Dr Butler said. “We’ve attracted speakers from around the world, giving us a truly global perspective on issues affecting us all, and we’ve endeavoured this year to take small steps to look beyond the conventional boundaries of economics with our choice of keynote speakers.” The full program is available here.
