Children’s charities benefit from Murdoch’s cinema partnership

Olly Pickett from Wheelchairs for Kids (left) with Steven Dickson, Senior Executive Director, Murdoch UniversityMurdoch University helped to raise more than $800,000 for children’s charities thanks to its partnership with McDonald’s Community Cinemas in 2014/15.

Ten local charities each received proceeds from the 14th annual season from funds raised across a number of outdoor cinemas which operate from November to April each year.

Murdoch University hosted a range of film events from November 2014 to February 2015, staffed entirely by volunteers meaning 100 per cent of profits could be donated to the charities. The University’s Lower Bush Court was one of four venues to host the outdoor cinema screenings.

Murdoch will again be hosting McDonald’s Community Cinemas so come down and join us under the big screen at Lower Bush Court from December 3 until April 9, 2016. Volunteers are also needed to help manage the venue each night, sell and check tickets at the Box Office, hand out beanbags and serve at the candy bar.

“Volunteering for McDonald’s Community Cinemas is an ideal opportunity to contribute to your community and wonderful children’s charities,” said Glenn Hamilton, Murdoch’s Events and Sponsorships Manager.

“I attended the charity presentation event organised by McDonald’s Community Cinemas last week and it was humbling to witness the reactions of each of the charity representatives when they learned how much was being donated to them.

“Our Senior Executive Director Steven Dickson presented a cheque for more than $110,000 to Olly Pickett, a volunteer for the Wheelchairs for Kids charity.”

Murdoch is still looking for volunteers who want to give back to the community. To register your interest in volunteering, click here. Volunteers will need to indicate Murdoch as their preferred site (McDonald’s Community Cinemas will also be running outdoor film events at Burswood and Bassendean).

For any queries, contact Murdoch’s Volunteer Coordinator Eliza Vlasich on e.vlasich@murdoch.edu.au.

Most of the first six weeks of the film schedule can be viewed on the McDonald's Community Cinemas website.

Tickets for screenings will be available at the gate or online from McDonald’s Community Cinemas website: www.communitycinemas.com.au.
