Celebrating art: Alan Dodge AM with Vice Chancellor Eeva Leinonen in the new gallery

An exciting new era for Murdoch University’s Art Collection was marked over the weekend with the launch of an impressive Art Gallery at the University’s Perth campus.

Spanning 190 square metres, the Art Gallery will showcase curated exhibitions highlighting a broad cross-section of artworks from the University’s Collection, which has been cultivated across four decades.

Founded in 1974, the Collection features close to 2000 artworks, demonstrating the incredibly rich variety of contemporary Australian visual arts practice, and is on display for members of the community to enjoy.

The highly anticipated launch event provided an opportunity to preview exciting new additions to the collection and pay respects to the generosity and ongoing support of donors who have contributed to the sustained growth of the Collection. The contribution of outgoing Art Collection Board Chairman, Mr Alan Dodge AM was also recognised at the event.

Speaking at the launch event, Murdoch University Vice Chancellor Eeva Leinonen said the University’s Art Collection is a vibrant growing cultural asset, which has been part of the University’s fabric since its inception.

“Art crosses language barriers, cultural differences and provides instant engagement with all the visitors that come onto our campuses. It creates a unique welcoming, and fosters a sense of place,” Professor Leinonen said.

“Whether we are bringing in Federal Ministers, a party of school children, industry leaders, international visitors or nervous new students, a gallery such as this provides a warm and engaging backdrop that speaks to all languages and interests.”

Murdoch University Art Curator, Mark Stewart hopes the collection will enrich and broaden the understanding of the vibrancy of contemporary art, particularly the exhibitions held in the impressive gallery.

“I hope the Collection will stimulate minds and contribute to the academic learning experience of students and staff,” he said.

Mr Stewart encouraged members of the community to open their minds to the multiple ways of viewing and interpreting art by exploring the rich diversity of the Collection.
